I saw Trane in English the next morning, but he didn’t look my way once. Obviously he wasn’t comfortable with people knowing that we spoke. He had that ‘bad boy’ reputation to uphold, and I didn’t expect him to let that go overnight, but today he seemed different than he had since we’d started talking. Like his unapproachable attitude had multiplied by the thousands. Anger seemed to pulse out of him like sonar waves. He sat rigidly in his seat, and he moved slowly, like he was hurt.

Something was wrong. I’d been worried about him from the time I’d walked away from him yesterday. When I’d seen that man in the hallway outside the cafeteria, I’d known who he was. He had to have been his father. The resemblance went beyond looks. His dad had looked angry, unapproachable, but unlike Trane, his father seemed dangerous, scary.

The second we saw him, Trane’s whole demeanor changed. He pulled back into himself completely. As soon as he let go of my arm, I felt the emotional wall I’d been slowly taking down one brick at a time snap back into place. We could have been standing a mile apart instead of inches.

In that moment, I wanted to run away and drag Trane with me. I didn’t want to leave him standing in the hallway with that man. It was so weird, but it felt wrong to leave him there. Not safe or something. I knew I had a vivid imagination, but there was something really off with the whole situation. I needed to do something to help.

After class, I took my time packing up my stuff. I watched him as he slowly got out of his seat. He moved like an old person, favoring his right side.

I followed him out of the classroom and stayed behind him as we walked down the hall. When we got near the janitor’s closet, I moved up next to him and grabbed ahold of his arm. Then I opened the door and pulled him into the closet with me.

When I turned back from closing the door, I could see that he was annoyed. This closet was a little small, and he sort of loomed over me. Being short could be such a disadvantage.

“What do you want?” he asked.

“Are you okay? I’ve been worried about you since yesterday.”

“Seriously? Stop. We aren’t friends. I told you that.”

“Something’s not right, Trane. Do you need help?”

“I don’t need your help. Just because I made the mistake of talking to you the last couple of days doesn’t mean you have a right to butt into my life.”

I ignored his protests. I needed information. “You’re hurt. What happened?”

He rolled his eyes. “I messed up my knee. I’m fine.”

“Did you go to the doctor?”

He made a disgusted sound. “It’s none of your business. Go away.”

When he turned towards the door, I could see that every move was painful for him.

“I know there’s something going on. I want to help you. Please let me.”

With his hand on the doorknob, he put his head down for a second.
